The best animated series ever, from Adventure Time to whatever The Zeta Project is. To Zis an alphabetical survey of a specific realm in pop culture. The A. V. Club kicked off its A. Easily my favourite animated series for weeks if not months. Rounding out your character roster, I'll mention Herc's girlfriend Helena.
The Three Stooges provides examples of the following tropes: Absurdly Ineffective Barricade: The shorts used this in a couple of varieties, including the door opening.V. To Z feature last month with a rundown of the best obscure Simpsons characters from chimpan- A to chimpan- Z. Now we’re back with another look at animation—albeit a broader one. This time, writers sifted through the hundreds if not thousands of animated shows that have graced the small screen, heatedly debating the merits of, say, Johnny Bravo versus The Jetsons, trying not to let our nostalgia- tinged memories get in the way. Some letters were easy—there are only so many “Z” shows, after all—while others (“S,” “B,” and so on) nearly drove us to drop anvils on one another. A: Adventure Time (2. Pendleton Ward’s Adventure Time began as a pitch that was as generic as possible so that it would have the widest appeal when viewed by network executives, but over six seasons and 1. That first story about a boy, his dog, a princess, and an evil king was the sapling that grew into a sprawling post- post- apocalyptic absurdist action comedy epic, drawing from influences that include (but are far from limited to) the cosmic comic- book work of Jack Kirby, Dungeons & Dragons, and a number of retro video games. The writers have developed an expansive mythology for the series, but the broadness of that initial concept has kept the show very malleable. In recent seasons, it’s become an outlet for unique creative voices to do short- form animation experiments, showing that a basic foundation doesn’t have to be a limitation. Butt- head and his even dumber friend Beavis perfectly captured the brains of hormonal, destructive teens—both their general ridiculousness and their biting wit. ![]() You weren’t exactly laughing with them, but if you weren’t a total stick in the mud—like the parents who protested the show—you probably recognized some of their opinions as your own, especially about the music videos they watched in every episode, which are sadly lacking on DVD releases. Unlike Homer Simpson, Lovitz’s film reviewer Jay Sherman was envisioned as an unlovable loser: a snooty Manhattanite who cultivated an incredibly high opinion of himself, yet craved the love of the same uncultured TV viewers he derided. Needless to say, ABC audiences who’d just finished watching Home Improvement never warmed to it, while even Fox’s Simpsons fans received Jaywith as much hospitality as Homer did in their crossover episode. But time has been kind to The Critic, whose format was ideal for the sort of quick- cut movie spoofs that can live well beyond their original context (and which, for better or worse, led to the similarly structured Family Guy). Newcomers may also be surprised to discover that Jay actually becomes a surprisingly sympathetic character through his constant humiliations yet plucky resolve, which creates the same affection for him as original viewers had for his perpetually endangered show. Yoko Kanno’s original songs—an integral part of every episode—are nothing to sneeze at, either. Deadpan, tabloid TV- obsessed 1. Daria Morgendorffer, described by The New York Times as “a blend of Dorothy Parker, Fran Lebowitz, and Janeane Garofalo,” was a role model to a generation of disaffected teen girls (and boys), and the show’s sardonic take on suburban teen life remains relevant today. Daria is an outcast, for sure, but in her way she’s the most normal person in her Sick Sad World populated with exaggerated caricatures of jocks, nerds, and popular girls. And she’s one of the few TV characters who actually reads. The character of Daria was initially spun off from our “B” pick, Mike Judge’s Beavis And Butt- head, but Judge had no involvement in the show itself. To distinguish itself from its parent series, series creators Glenn Eichler and Susie Lewis Lynn transferred the Morgendorffers to the neatly manicured suburb of Lawndale in the first episode, a move that provided endless targets for Daria’s sarcastic takedowns. The Cat (1. 99. 2- 1. It never hurts to help,” insisted Saturday morning’s most altruistic feline. That cheerful motto aside, the real moral of Eek! The Cat was how much helping can hurt. Episode in and episode out, the titular ball of optimistic fur learned the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished—a lesson often taught by his irritable (and chompy) canine nemesis, Sharky The Sharkdog. Created by Savage Steve Holland, the writer/director of Better Off Dead, Fox’s gleefully sadistic series delighted in putting its do- gooder hero through the ringer, all while satirizing a hypothetical audience of spoiled, impatient, cereal- eating kids. Arguably even funnier was the companion segment: Introduced in the second season, The Terrible Thunderlizards pitted a trio of armed- to- the- teeth dinosaurs against the clueless humans who accidentally, but without fail, get the best of them. Packaged together on one half- hour bill, the two programs offered a weekly dose of mean- spirited mayhem. Tex Avery would be proud. William Hanna and Joseph Barbera borrowed liberally from one of television’s best- loved comedies, The Honeymooners, building their series around two blue- collar buddies, Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, and their long- suffering wives Wilma and Betty. Hanna- Barbera’s stroke of genius was setting The Flintstones in a Stone Age world of cavemen and dinosaurs (which never existed at the same time in actual history, but whatever). With that one twist, the show was able to spin six seasons of fairly typical sitcom high jinks—neighborly feuds, trouble with the boss, having kids, and more—and make it all seem fairly fresh and clever by tacking the words “rock” or “slate” or “granite” onto otherwise ordinary names and concepts. Intentionally or not, The Flintstonesexposed some of the earliest sitcom clich. But Gravity Falls has a distinct advantage over other coming- of- age stories that go bump in the night: It’s a cartoon, so the show’s ranks of artfully rendered nightmares from the preteen psyche are limited only by its animators’ imaginations. Taking place during one crazy summer in the lives of twins Dipper (Jason Ritter) and Mabel (Kristen Schaal) Pines, Gravity Falls is essentially a Frankenstein’s monster of Bart- and- Lisa- centric Simpsons episodes, the atmosphere of Twin Peaks, and the dense mythologizing of The X- Files and Lost. Fortunately, the brain and the heart of Gravity Falls communicate better than that of Frankenstein’s actual monster, channeling well- calibrated chills and emotionally honest laughs through Dipper and Mabel’s tangles with lake monsters, time travelers, an eerily influential (and totally fraudulent) child psychic, and the supernatural forces that tie together everything (and everyone) in Gravity Falls. But this four- season cult cartoon, born on UPN and raised in the more permissive household of Adult Swim, belongs equally to its co- creator, Loren Bouchard. There are telltale signs of both writers’ involvement over four stellar seasons. The elaborate movie homages and rock operas dreamt up by the fictional Brendon feel like dry runs to the power- chord insanity of the real Brendon’s Metalocalypse. Likewise, the show’s vision of precocious childhood anticipates the more refined pleasures Bouchard now offers with Bob’s Burgers. But Home Movies is its own animal, heavy on inspired improvisation and featuring characters as richly developed as they are crudely drawn (first in Squigglevision, then through a marginally more attractive Flash animation). And with all due respect to Sterling Archer and Bob Belcher, H. Jon Benjamin’s definitive vocal performance may still be his embodiment of ill- tempered peewee soccer coach John Mc. Guirk, the most uproarious of this show’s young and old screw- ups. From its seemingly bizarre nature to its too- early demise, the Nickelodeon cartoon brought a darker form of entertainment to the kid’s network. Aimed at early teenagers, Invader Zim followed the pint- sized title character, an extraterrestrial from the planet Irk determined to destroy Earth, for two seasons. Zim’s surrounding cast—GIR, a defective robot sometimes masquerading as a dog, and Dib, a hip and young paranormal investigator that is wise to Zim’s real identity—paired with his own ineptitude keeps him from ever succeeding. But the same cannot be said of the cartoon, which welcomed critical acclaim for straddling the line between child and adult entertainment with episodes like season one’s “Bloaty’s Pizza Hog,” in which a grossly obese man zips himself into a hog costume to hawk more- grimy- than- greasy pizza to children he allows to crawl all over him. The constant depiction of Earth as a complete shitcan only adds to this dingy, but delightful program. Created by Van Partible, Johnny Bravo used its main character to smack down—hard—the idea of the ultra- perfect male and his obnoxious sense of entitlement, while also exploring, in increments, some of Johnny’s surprising positive qualities. The show also reveled in its animated insanity, placing Johnny in the midst of a Schoolhouse Rocks parody, a Scooby- Doo quest, and a date with a werewolf. The show also essentially launched the careers of Butch Hartman and Seth Mac. Farlane. Set in the fictional suburban sprawl of Arlen, Texas, Fox’s second- longest- running animated sitcom remained firmly rooted in the mundane drama of raising a family and running a business. The show was a perfect synthesis of sensibilities: Co- creator Greg Daniels, formerly of The Simpsons and later of The Office, brought a wealth of character- driven comedy, softening without dulling the satirical edge of Beavis And Butt- head mastermind Mike Judge. The result was a show that poked gentle fun at traditional American values—the kind held dear by its hero, sensible and stodgy propane salesman Hank Hill—without stooping to condescension. A “Deep Space Hank” would have betrayed that earthbound appeal.

Saimdang- the Herstory . Mind you, it’s not because one is easily one of the most hyped sageuks in years and isn’t performing well, while the other seems to have just been thrown out there as an afterthought and is pulling in good ratings, as well as better critical and popular response, it’s the content and themes. Personally speaking, I spent almost 2 years impatiently waiting for Saimdang, and was pretty sure it was going to be the best sageuk of the year when it did come out, something that I thought would hold true after watching the first two episodes. In contrast, Rebel was barely on my radar, and on my “watch now” list instead of “watch if people say good things while it airs” primarily because I liked Hwang Jin- Young’s previous sageuk (and only previous writing credit aside from a special) King’s Daughter Soo Baek Hyang. Halfway through their runs,Saimdang was moved to “I really like it but it could be better” status (with a lot of anger for how SBS execs screwed the show and LYA over, and now they’re taking their screwups out on the show, but I’m not going to dwell on that today) while Rebel has become the sageuk I just can’t see another sageuk surpassing it for a while. Saimdang and Dae Jang Geum, aka, one of the most iconic sageuks ever that also served to help solidify Lee Young Ae’s iconic status, take place at roughly the same time. This is something SBS is very aware of, and while it doesn’t have the endless DJG references we probably would have had if the show had aired on MBC, it very much tried t rely on DJG nostalgia to sell the show, and the sageuk plotline in Saimdang has much more in common with sageuks of a dozen years ago in terms of characterization, tone and pacing than anything from this decade. Unfortunately, people came for Lee Young Ae in a sageuk from this decade, not the first half of the last decade. Now the ACTUAL background begins DJG is largely known in western fandom for helping in to make sageuks far more female- centric, and for helping to establish the basic formula that most of the popular and/or commercially successful “long and stuffy” sageuks have sageuks have followed since. The rest of this is partially hearsay, as I’m going by what others have told me about pre- DJG sageuks, as DJF is the second oldest I’ve seen. The oldest is Damo, a show that is less iconic than DJG, and that essentially created the formula for the genre that we consider to be fusion sageuks. Both shows are also known for taking the focus away from the throneroom. Watch video clips full episodes of the of Saimdang, the Herstory SBS Teaser: Saimdang, Light's Diary with subtitles.Saimdang, Light's Diary (Hangul: DJG is still a palace intrigue drama, while Damo steps away from the palace completely, focusing instead on police officers investigating a rebellion, though it does check in with the palace intrigue. But in stepping away from the throneroom and inner palace intrigues, both did something most sageuks avoided: they tackled the issue of class. Both shows featured a heroine of noble birth- Chae Ok, the heroine of Damo was a young noblewoman who became a slave as a child after her father was accused of treason, while Jang Geum’s parents both went into hiding as commoners before she was born, though for different reasons. From what I’ve been told, prior to these two, the main audience for sageuks was middle aged men, and because of this, the focus was almost exclusively on war and palace politics, usually featuring, well, middleaged men. Then, in 2. 00. 3, there was suddenly a spurt of several successful series featuring female leads. They certainly weren’t the first to do so, it just worked out so that there was a concentration of several at once. Part of what made DJG and Damo stand out was that they were meant to appeal to a wider audience, had higher production values, sweeping (and very different) romances, and broader plots (I mean it wasn’t JUST “maybe our ratings will go up if we try to appeal to women,” but that was certainly a part of it). ![]() But they also stood out because the positioning of their heroines- one being made a slave and the other growing up as a commoner- meant that these stories weren’t only about the nobility. The servant class in the city featured heavily in DJG, while rural commoners and their perspective of civil unrest and the nobility featured heavily in Damo. Of course, ultimately, both heroines and their love interests WERE of the nobility, but the door to including the perspectives of other classes was open, and most sageuks since then have taken advantage of that door being open. Many (I want to say “most” but it kind of hovers in middle ground, I think) will have the protagonist spend part of their life as either a commoner or a poor noble. The protagonist of noble birth who lives as a commoner comes in 2 main varieties: they were born in secret in one way or another, and only find out they have noble (or royal) blood much later in life, after establishing themselves one way or another, or they live as a noble or royal as a child, but are forced to live as commoners or slaves for many of their formative ears before reclaiming their true status. On a similar note, protagonists who actually are commoners with no noble or royal blood are considered exceptional. Saimdang, the Herstory . An upcoming period drama about the life of Shin Saimdang. Saimdang, Light's Diary is a really good drama and the. ![]() They’re special, they’re. But there’s also the flipside. ![]() The flipside is that all the corrupt and scheming politicians, the cruel masters are treated as individuals. Their social status may have contributed to their corruption an cruelty, but only in that the individual would have been that way anyway, they just happen to have more power, and they re many good and kind masters, and well meaning politicians, That the class system itself was a problem, that there was a social order that told people they were inherently better than others by birth, was not a consideration. Shows have tackled this mindset over the years (Maids and Chuno come to mind for sageuks I’ve seen that try to push the standard approach, re: class, a bit), but none have fully committed to taking it on until now. Except that Saimdang is not the show that did so. Saimdang takes the same approach as it’s predecessor- and most sageuks in between- of romanticizing the nobility while also tackling the plights of the lower classes. But what was revolutionary 1. And then we have Rebel. One of the very first things Rebel does is completely obliterate any idea that Gil Dong has noble blood, in a flashforward at the beginning where King Yeonsangun confronts Gil Dong. Yeonsangun: “I will ask you clearly. I heard you are a descendant of the demolished royal family of Goryeo. I heard your anger comes from having a father of the noble class and a mother who is a maid. Who on earth are you?” (Gil Dong is shaking his head in amused contempt throughout this.)Gil Dong: “I am not a descendant of the royal family from Goryeo. Nor am I a son of a minister, or from a poor noble family. I am only a son of my father. My father, a servant over generations, Amogae.”Yeonsangun: *outraged, disbelieving laughter* “That’s impossible. It’s impossible that someone like you could’ve been born to such a lowly man.”Gil Dong: “You were born to the master of this country. How did you turn out to be such a lowly man?”Ok, first of all, THE BURN THERE, GIL DONG! I can only assume that the camera pans out and away so fast after that so that we don’t see Yeonsangun burst into flames from that one. HOWEVER, while we didn’t know it when the episode aired 3 months ago, this scene is essential to the world view of Rebel. Because ever “noble” sageuk origin was just shot down, and the idea of the “special” commoner isn’t far behind it. And Yeonsangun NEEDS Gil Dong to have that origin. His worldview cannot allow for a “common” person to have more sway than him. Gil Dong doesn’t simply violate his person worldview, his very existence violates the established social order and divine superiority of birth, something that we come to full force for Yeonsangun at the beginning of the latest episode, and something that is beginning to consume him. Of course, Rebel relies in part of a prophecy of a “mighty child” (Gil Dong) a child born with superhuman strength and healing powers, destined both to become a general and to suffer great losses if he does not control himself. However, it is not Gil Dong’s power that makes him special, it what he does with it. Gil Dong’s power is not what makes him special or what makes him a hero, but it is part of what makes him able to DO something. The “Mighty Child” is born of necessity, not because some random kid won the genetic lottery. I’ve said plenty about my feelings re: The Mighty Child(ren) in previous tumblr posts and will probably make even more posts focused on that aspect in the future, so I won’t dwell on that now. Moving on from The Mighty Child: Rebel takes the stance that the class system isn’t simply a case of advantage and disadvantage with good ad bad people, but rather, the class system itself is an ideology, and that ideology is the enemy. It isn’t that there are bad apples (and remember, the point of the whole “bad apple” thing is that if there’s a bad apple among your apples, you need to just toss them all and get new apples, not that you just take out the one bad apple and assume all the others that came from the same place are perfect just because you can’t see their problems on the outside) it is that there cannot be good and there is no justice in a system that holds that one group of people is inherently superior to another, and you cannot expect the people who benefit from that system to help find justice in it. When Gil Dong’s father, Amogae, kills his master, Lord Jo to avenge his murdered wife, the widowed Lady Jo only hates Amogae in part because of her murdered husband. What she truly hates Amogae for, the reason she wants him destroyed, the crime she can never forgive, is that Amogae is an abomination that has violated the natural order. THAT is the true villain of Rebel. Merck Veterinary Manual. Special Abilities : : d. Natural Abilities. This category includes abilities a creature has because of its physical nature. An antimagic effect has the following powers and characteristics. Once a magical effect is no longer affected by the antimagic (the antimagic fades, the center of the effect moves away, and so on), the magic returns. Spells that still have part of their duration left begin functioning again, magic items are once again useful, and so forth. Spell areas that include both an antimagic area and a normal area, but are not centered in the antimagic area, still function in the normal area. If the spell’s center is in the antimagic area, then the spell is suppressed. Golems and other constructs, elementals, outsiders, and undead, still function in an antimagic area (though the antimagic area suppresses their spellcasting and their supernatural and spell- like abilities normally). If such creatures are summoned or conjured, however, see below. Summoned or conjured creatures of any type, as well as incorporeal creatures, wink out if they enter the area of an antimagic effect. They reappear in the same spot once the field goes away. Magic items with continuous effects do not function in the area of an antimagic effect, but their effects are not canceled (so the contents of a bag of holding are unavailable, but neither spill out nor disappear forever). Two antimagic areas in the same place do not cancel each other out, nor do they stack. Wall of force, prismatic wall, and prismatic sphere are not affected by antimagic. Break enchantment, dispel magic, and greater dispel magic spells do not dispel antimagic. Mage’s disjunction has a 1% chance per caster level of destroying an antimagic field. If the antimagic field survives the disjunction, no items within it are disjoined. Blindsight And Blindsense. Some creatures have blindsight, the extraordinary ability to use a nonvisual sense (or a combination of such senses) to operate effectively without vision. Such sense may include sensitivity to vibrations, acute scent, keen hearing, or echolocation. This ability makes invisibility and concealment (even magical darkness) irrelevant to the creature (though it still can’t see ethereal creatures and must have line of effect to a creature or object to discern that creature or object). This ability operates out to a range specified in the creature description. Unless noted otherwise, blindsight is continuous, and the creature need do nothing to use it. Some forms of blindsight, however, must be triggered as a free action. If so, this is noted in the creature’s description. If a creature must trigger its blindsight ability, the creature gains the benefits of blindsight only during its turn. A creature cannot read with blindsight. Blindsight does not subject a creature to gaze attacks (even though darkvision does). Blinding attacks do not penalize creatures using blindsight. Deafening attacks thwart blindsight if it relies on hearing. Blindsight works underwater but not in a vacuum. Blindsight negates displacement and blur effects. Blindsense. Other creatures have blindsense, a lesser ability that lets the creature notice things it cannot see, but without the precision of blindsight. Stephen Strange (Earth- 6. Strange refused, but couldn't leave immediately due to a sudden blizzard. While staying for the duration of the storm, Strange witnessed the Ancient One's apprentice, Baron Mordo, secretly attack the teacher with mystically summoned skeletons, which the old man easily dispelled. Strange, his skepticism eroding, confronted Mordo about the treachery but Mordo responded with restraining spells that kept Strange from warning the Ancient One or attacking Mordo physically. Amazed by these displays of magic, Strange underwent a change of heart. Deciding that the only way to stop Mordo was to learn magic himself in order to challenge Mordo on his terms, Strange accepted the Ancient One's offer. Pleased by Strange's acceptance for unselfish reasons, the Ancient One removed the mystic restraints, explaining that he was well aware of Mordo's treachery but preferred to keep Mordo close by in order to control and possibly change him. He regarded his hidden prowess so highly that he rejected Daimon Hellstrom for Strange as his pupil. The Ancient One had planned to make Dr. Strange his successor for a long time. A few years after Strange's arrival, Mordo left the Ancient One's palace to seek greater power. The two rivals would clash often in the future. It was during this time that Strange passed a test against Death itself. Strange also found allies among more of earth's heroes, aiding the Black Fox in at least two adventures, while other adventurers, such as Immortalis and Terror, Inc., regarded him with skepticism. Strange became a mystic consultant, establishing his Sanctum Sanctorum in New York's Greenwich Village. He was attended by Wong, latest in a centuries- old bloodline that had served the Ancient One, and who had become both Strange's servant and his friend. During this time Strange fought the demonic entities such as the Possessors. Strange also fought the otherworldly Nightmare, who fed upon dreaming humanity's terror, and became one of Strange's most bitter enemies. At one point Loki, the Asgardian god of trickery manipulated Strange into attacking his heroic foster brother, Thor. The treachery was soon exposed, however, and Strange turned against Loki. Donald Blake save Strange's life by operating on him after another battle with Mordo. Soon after, a clash with Mordo led Strange to ally with the young Spider- Man, who helped Strange rescue several people from a mystic dimension. The experience proved so traumatic that Spider- Man asked Strange to remove their memories of the event, though this caused them to forget Spider- Man's heroism as well. Impressed by the young hero's bravery and altruism, Strange came to regard him as a friend, and the two have teamed up many times over the years. Upon learning of Dormammu's intent, the Ancient One sent Strange to the Dark Dimension to do battle with the evil foe. While there, Strange was approached by Clea, a novice mystic and, though few knew it at the time, daughter of Dormammu's sister Umar. Clea feared that if Dormammu fell as ruler of the Dark Dimension, dimensional barriers would weaken and the realm would be ravaged by the Mindless Ones. Clea thus sought to prevent the duel, but Strange would not yield. Dormammu easily outmatched Strange, but in the process lost just enough of his energies that the Mindless Ones were able to invade. Seeking to save the Dark Dimension's denizens, Strange lent Dormammu enough power to create a new barrier. Enraged by his own weakness, Dormammu felt honor- bound to spare Strange, who in turn bargained with him to spare both the Earth- Realm and the attractive Clea. The vengeful Dormammu never forgot the humiliation, however, and became one of Strange's most implacable enemies. Now more involved with the superhero community, he became a special consultant to prominent super- teams such as the Fantastic Four, the X- Men, and the Avengers. Months after attending the wedding of Reed and Sue Richards. Prevented from returning to the Earth- Realm by metaphysical law so long as Asmodeus occupied his form, Strange adopted a new form with a full- face mask (perhaps emulating his superhero allies). After defeating Asmodeus, Strange retained the new appearance to preserve his anonymity. After carelessly revealing his name during a battle with Nightmare, the cosmic Eternity, whom Strange was aiding at the time, agreed to return Strange's anonymity by altering all relevant earthly documents and memories bearing the name “Stephen Strange” to “Stephen Sanders.” . To face the onslaught, Strange manipulated Prince Namor of Atlantis. Strange was troubled by his arrogant exploitation of Namor and the Hulk, however, and decided to forego magic and return to medicine as a consultant, selflessly performing the duties once thought beneath him. After Baron Mordo tried to kill him, Strange returned to sorcery and defeated Mordo with the help of the Ancient One. The Ancient One, for reasons of his own, reversed Eternity's spell, restoring the name . Shortly thereafter, the Nameless One returned and Strange donned his (non- masked) robes to confront the threat alongside Namor and the Hulk. Becoming friends despite their differences. While certain Illuminati members were unable to attend certain gatherings (such as Xavier and Iron Man), Strange attended all known meetings, adding the viewpoint and perspective his decades of battling mystic evil had brought him. This led to their capture, experimentation, and analysis, which enabled the Skrulls to eventually perform enough reverse biological engineering and cloning to gather the resources required to launch a covert invasion. Shuma- Gorath sought to return through the mind of the Ancient One himself, and Strange entered his mentor's mind to confront the creature. After fighting a losing battle, the Ancient One himself asked Strange to slay him rather than allow Shuma- Gorath passage to Earth. The Ancient One's physical death made him one with Eternity, and Strange inherited the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme, guardian of the entire universe. Seeking solace from his new burdens, Strange attempted to use his power to revive his brother Victor using spells from the Book of the Vishanti; unfortunately, Strange did not realize he had read the Vampiric Verses, imbuing Victor with the potential for resurrection as a vampire. Thinking the spells had failed, Strange left his brother's body in cold storage. Though this pitted Strange against less magical foes (such as the mutant Magneto, the alien Nebulon. This allowed Strange to become possessed by the spirit of the Star of Capistan, transforming him into the Red Rajah. As the Rajah, Strange tried to link the consciousnesses of all the people of New York City with his own to create a type of utopian society. Eventually Strange's teammates in the Defenders were able to free him from the effects of the Star, which Strange promptly destroyed. As a result of this, Strange felt it necessary to take a leave from the Defenders in order to renew his commitment to the mystic arts in order to keep his powers at their peak. The Defenders continued on without him and later Strange would rejoin the group when they required his assistance. When Strange rejected the offer he was stripped of the mantle and power of Sorcerer Supreme. Strange soon joined battle with the Creators, defeating their ally, the In- Betweener, and thwarting their reality- reshaping plans. Braithwaite, and Mary Dunlop Maclean. The Crisis has been in continuous print since 1. The magazine’s name was inspired by James Russell Lowell’s 1. The suggestion to name the magazine after the poem came from one of the NAACP co- founders and noted white abolitionist Mary White Ovington. As the founding editor of The Crisis, Du Bois proclaimed his intentions in his first editorial. It takes its name from the fact that the editors believe that this is a critical time in the history of the advancement of men. Du Bois wrote in Dusk of Dawn (1. The Crisis to represent his personal opinions. After this Riot, William Walling composed an article in the newspaper, prompting his audience to fight racism in a united fashion. Oswald Villard responded to Walling’s article in an article of his own titled The Call, an article welcoming individuals to attend a national meeting who were dedicated to intersectional justice for all citizens despite race. This meeting and signing of the call led to the formation of the NAACP in 1. In its first year, the journal had a monthly circulation of 1,0. The Crisis would go on to become incredibly influential during the 1. Harlem Renaissance literature movement. Literary and artistic impact during the Harlem Renaissance. Though not nearly as well- known today as Du Bois, Fauset's literary contributions were equal in importance. The poet Langston Hughes described Fauset as one of the . Hughes wrote in his autobiography The Big Sea that the parties at Fauset’s Harlem home were rather exclusive “literary soirees with much poetry but little to drink. Despite Fauset’s personal tastes and interests in her own writing, she featured poetry, prose, short stories, essays and plays in The Crisis. Fauset was also the primary force that kept the New York office going logistically between 1. After her departure from The Crisis, the quality and quantity of the literature section of The Crisis declined. In her biography of Fauset, Jessie Redmon Fauset, Black American Writer, Carolyn Wedin Sylvander writes that after Fauset's departure, several poets criticized Du Bois for neglecting literature, printing pieces the poets had specifically requested not be published, or printing old pieces. In addition to literature, art played an important role in The Crisis’s overall message and function. In his famous October 1. I stand in utter shamelessness and say that whatever art I have for writing has been used always for propaganda for gaining the right of black folk to love and enjoy. I do not care a damn for any art that is not used for propaganda. But I do care when propaganda is confined to one side while the other is stripped and silent. In Protest and Propaganda, Kirschke wrote that . Through the inclusion of art and poetry, creative writing, and photography, The Crisis could bring beauty into the home. The arts were also used to capture current events. Political cartoons, illustrations and graphic photographs aligned with Du Bois’ strong interest in social justice and in highlighting heinous crimes being committed against African Americans. Educational impact under Du Bois. Early on, the magazine fostered an interest in higher education, reporting how the black universities were operating financially and administratively and on the hardships these colleges endured. Children and education were two topics that mattered quite a bit to Du Bois, whose philosophy during that era was that a “Talented Tenth” of the African- American population should be bred, raised and trained to become elite intellectual and political leaders – a topic he first introduced in his 1. The Souls of Black Folk. Readers could see this reflected in the annual Children’s and Education numbers, which came out in October and July, respectively, and which leaned heavily on photography as a medium for showing off the best of the best of African- American youth. Fauset, who contributed articles to Crisis long before becoming the literary editor in 1. The Brownies’ Book, which was a monthly children’s magazine that Du Bois, the Crisis business editor, Augustus Dill, and Fauset printed in 1. The Brownies’ Book focused heavily on promoting standards of gender, class and racial behavior and pride, also using photographs to inspire young African- American children. Common themes in The Brownies’ Book included doing well in school, taking pride in one’s appearance, and learning about one’s heritage, with many African folk tales and other African cultural issues mentioned. Advertising also tended to focus heavily on education, with ads for various schools, institutions, training courses, and, of course, colleges and universities, featured in every issue during this time period, appearing before the table of contents in many cases. Political impact under Du Bois. Common concerns in his writings included promoting a positive, dignified, progressive image of African- American people; calling for action, social justice and an end to violence against blacks; and promoting good international relations, especially in regards to the Pan- African movement. All of the issues between 1. Du Bois (later renamed from . Other Du Bois- authored columns included a . Du Bois frequently included reviews of news articles from other publications that he felt were incorrect, and also tracked certain special causes. As an editor, Du Bois did not shy away from showing photographs of and writing about controversial issues, including lynching, racism in the U. S. Washington’s views and Marcus Garvey’s views. The Crisis was also used to promote the production of black cinema. The focal point of their promotion was the Ethiopian Art Theatre which was set in the city of Chicago in existence from 1. The Theatre was a place that provided training and promotion of black actors as well as employment for black citizens of Chicago. The Theatre attracted thousands blacks from the South who saw it as an opportunity of success and pride within the black community. During Fauset’s tenure as literary editor, she wrote and edited a column entitled “The Looking Glass,” which was primarily literature and art review, but also included other essays. While Fauset’s primary concern and duties were with the literature of the times, she shared other political outlooks with Du Bois, such as a mutual concern with education and families. African cultural issues were also of concern to both Du Bois and Fauset in general, with their many trips overseas, their participation in several Pan- African Congresses and Conferences, and African- themed cover art and other art gracing the pages of The Crisis throughout the years. After Du Bois. This led to disputes between Du Bois and the NAACP, resulting in his resignation as editor in 1. He was replaced by Roy Wilkins. However, financial issues were also at play. In his 1. 94. 0 memoir Dusk of Dawn, Du Bois wrote that the periodical suffered during the Great Depression as the . There have been 1. Du Bois’s departure. Roy Wilkins remained editor after Du Bois until 1. NAACP secretary. Ivy subsequently became the editor of the magazine until his retirement in 1. The magazine continued to print news articles and opinion columns on current events and social concerns. After Ivy’s retirement, other persons who served as editor included Henry Lee Moon, Warren Marr II, Chester Higgins, Sr., Maybelle Ward, Fred Beauford, Garland Thompson, Denise Crittendon, Gentry Trotter, Paul Ruffins, Ida F. Lewis, Phil Petrie, and Victoria Valentine. From 1. 99. 7 to 2. The New Crisis: The Magazine of Opportunities and Ideas, but the title has since reverted to The Crisis. On August 7, 2. 00. Jabari Asim was named editor of The Crisis by then publisher Roger Wilkins. Asim came to The Crisis from The Washington Post, where he was Book World deputy editor. The Chicago Tribune named The Crisis one of its . These advertisements often reflected the views of the current editor. Under Du Bois, advertisements on education are most prevalent. All types of schools, institutions, training courses, colleges and universities. Some of the schools advertised are Howard University, Fisk University, Paine College, The Cheyney Training School for Teachers and many others. The number one thing these schools had in common was they were all only for colored students. Another popular advertisement under Du Bois was job advertisements. Some of the jobs advertised were teachers, vendors, nurses, dentists, civil service and stenographers. There was always a need for advertising agents. The Crisis even had its own ad for agents specifically for the magazine. The advertisement section also includes ads for other magazines and books to read. One of these magazines is The Brownies' Book, a magazine for children; a double subscription to The Brownies' Book and The Crisis for a special price is even offered. Another was Locoma Magazine, an adult magazine featuring such topics as marriage, divorce, eugenics, and birth control. The Crisis also advertised books that claimed to be necessary reading for all African Americans. Some of these books included Darkwater: Voices from Within the Veil by Du Bois, Scott's Official History of the American Negro in the Great War by Emmett Jay Scott, and As Nature Leads by J. Adorkable: She thumps her foot very quickly when she's upset, and when she chases after Weaselton who has just robbed the florist she cheers at the chance of getting to apprehend a criminal. All of the Other Reindeer: Nobody at the ZPD actively shuns Judy, but apart from Clawhauser, nobody is particularly friendly to her either as she is a rookie bunny cop among the traditionally megafauna police force, so until she proves herself they don't consider her to be a real cop or help her out with the Otterton case. Chief Bogo also had no issue with saying to her face that he wasn't happy about Lionheart saddling him with her.
All There in the Manual: Judy is never referred to by the name Judith Laverne Hopps in the film. Her full name was revealed by Director Rich Moore. Barefoot Cartoon Animal: Downplayed compared to almost every other character. The major exceptions are Mr. Big, who wears spats, and Gazelle, The One Who Wears Shoes; also, some of the other cops have footwear similar to Judy's. As the image above shows, she does have some sort of footwear when in her police uniform, but it leaves her toes exposed. Could also be a bit of a Genius Bonus since, due to hares being a digitigrade species (ones that walk primarily on their toes), her feet are technically uncovered since they would be her primary method of walking were she on all fours. However, when Judy is not wearing her police uniform, she is completely barefoot. Berserk Button: She does not like to be underestimated and/or dismissed. When she petitions Chief Bogo about her parking duty assignment and he responds that he doesn't care that she was top of her class, this leads to an agitated foot stomping and self- imposed goal of 2. When Nick dismisses her as a naive hick with dreams that will soon be crashing to the ground, she engages him in a heated verbal exchange that causes her to overlook that she's just walked into wet cement. Big assumes she's just a performer in a police costume she responds by coming face- to- face with him saying that she will not be intimidated and will investigate no matter what. An action that leads to both her and Nick almost being iced. Blackmail: She's not above doing this; first, she uses a health code violation in the ice cream shop to get the prejudiced elephant to sell Nick the Jumbo- pop he needed for his scheme. After she's given the Otterton case, she tricks Nick into boasting about how much money he makes while using her carrot pen recorder to tape it, then threatens to arrest him for felony tax evasion unless he helps her. Blue Is Heroic: By the end of the film both Judy and Nick are police officers wearing the traditional blue police uniform. Brains and Brawn: Judy is the Brawn while Nick is the Brains. While not unintelligent, Judy's much less savvy than Nick and is more prone to physical derring- do. Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Judy is sweet, kind, and helps Nick acknowledge his hardships and face his troubles. Bully Hunter: Her Establishing Character Moment comes at the begining of the film when, as a child, she stands up to Gideon who is bullying her friends. Later, she sticks up for Nick (who was a complete stranger at that point) against the blatantly prejudiced elephant at the ice cream shop. Bunnies for Cuteness: A rare Deconstruction. Judy is pretty much aware of this trope and actively works to avoid being called . She even explains to Clawhauser that it's offensive to call a bunny . She confronts her own instilled Fantastic Racism and learns to stop thinking that way. This is most obvious in her interactions with Nick; They first meet because Judy had profiled him for being a fox. By the climax, she trusts Nick to the point where she knew that him fake- biting her throat as part of their Batman Gambit was going to be completely harmless. Character Tics: When Gideon attacked her as a child, he made fun of how her nose twitches when she's scared. An event almost 16 months in the making is going down right this moment at the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, New York. Internet phenomenon April the Giraffe. Her ears also droop when she's sad, as her mother points out later in the film. She also rapid- fire stomps her foot when irritated. As an adult her nose also twitches when she is puzzled or curious at a situation like when she is confused watching Nick/Finnick carrying out their Pawpsicle hustle or later as she watches Doug distilling the Nighthowler serum. Chekhov's Armory: Judy's carrot pen recorder and the blueberries she brings from her hometown pay off in a big way during the climax. Chekhov's Skill: Judy uses her hopping abilities early in the movie to make up for her small size and lack of strength and to complete her police training. She later uses them regularly in her job, from placing tickets on large cars to facing bigger opponents. Chronic Hero Syndrome: Deconstructed. Her tendency to personally step in and try to solve problems even when she doesn't have the authority to do so nearly gets her fired on her second day on the job. Classical Anti- Hero: While she's mostly a conventional hero, her struggle with her own biases gives her elements of this. Cool Aunt: Judy is greatly admired by her favorite niece, Cotton. Their affection for each other is shown by the fact that of the three photos Judy chose to bring with her to Zootopia (seen on her apartment desk) one is a picture of just her and Cotton. This picture also serves as the lock screen photo on her smartphone. Cool Big Sis: Many of Judy's younger siblings look up to her as they are shown attending her graduation and seeing her off when she boards the train to Zootopia. Country Mouse: She grew up in rural Bunnyburrow and is in awe (and a little overwhelmed) with life in the big city once she moves to Zootopia. Cowboy Cop: Judy has little problem bending the rules in the pursuit of justice. Over the course of the film, she: Abandons her post to chase after a suspect without being authorized. Volunteers herself to the case of finding Mr. Otterton in front of the victim's wife without first seeking authorization. The wiki even addresses that she likes hugs in her personal data. Some promotional videos even have her giving Nick tackle hugs in an attempt to join his selfies. Cute Bruiser: She's an adorable little bunny, but don't underestimate her. She was able to take down a rhino all by herself during her police academy training. Cuteness Overload: Suffers from this when she falls for Finnick's act as Nick's elephant- loving son and later when she discovers that Fru Fru is pregnant and planning on naming her daughter after her. Daddy's Girl: Implied by the fact that of the three pictures Judy chooses to bring with her to Zootopia (on her apartment desk) one is picture of just her and her father. Bonnie only appears in the group photo to the left of the Judy/Stu photo. Also Stu has his Affectionate Nickname for her of . She's very methodical in trying to uncover clues and potential leads to find Mr. Otterton. Determinator: Fighting a bully who's twice her size? Training to become a cop despite everyone telling her it's impossible? Taking on a case even though she has only 4. Whatever the goal, once Judy decides to take action, nothing can stand in her way. She means it when she says she doesn't know when to quit. Digging Yourself Deeper: When Nick confronts her about her prejudice toward predators, she responds with something that can easily be construed as You Are a Credit to Your Race, which only makes him angrier. Does Not Know Her Own Strength: Downplayed example. When Nick reveals that he saved a briefcase full of evidence from the exploding subway car, she gets excited and gives him a playful jab in the arm. She wasn't trying to hurt him, but he flinched like it actually hurt quite a bit. Establishing Character Moment: In the A Minor Kidroduction, we see little Judy's passionate dream of being a cop, and she stands up to a bully in defense of her classmates, showing that she is a bunny who will risk her own safety in pursuit of justice for others. Also, the fact that she technically loses the fight but still successfully gets the stolen tickets back helps show that Judy is capable of thinking on her feet to accomplish her goals despite early setbacks. Expressive Ears: Her ears goes down when she's depressed or annoyed while staying straight up when she's happy. Her mother makes note of this at one point. Bonnie: You are not fine, your ears are droopy. Expy: A top cop, dreaming of the job since childhood, seemingly unnecessary bulletproof vest, plays Straight Man to a less professional partner; she's an adorable, less stoic, bunny Nicholas Angel. Fair Cop: She's a cop and is quite pretty. Fantastic Racism: She embraces the prey/predator life in Zootopia wholeheartedly, but due to her upbringing and the incident with Gideon, she has some ingrained preconceptions against predators, and foxes in particular. Although she initially protests her parents trying to give her fox repellent, she ultimately ends up carrying it around with her. Fatal Flaw: Impulsiveness. It causes her to: endanger the residents of Little Rodentia; almost get herself fired by taking on a case without permission; stake her career on solving a case in 4. Mr. Big, and try and steal an entire train car full of evidence instead of sneaking away with a sample to show the ZPD. Female Flatfoot and Snarky Guy: Judy is a naive and idealistic rookie cop trying to make a difference in a world full of prejudice. She's forced to work with the cynical and snarky Con Artist Nick because he's her only lead. |
